Black label: a standard edition, not a first-run certificate

"Black label" is a collector term, not the official name of a Sony range in Europe. It is generally used to distinguish standard dressing from Platinum. In many cases, this dressing fits well with the initial output, but it can also cover several manufactures.

What may interest a collector:

  • original jacket and silkscreen;
  • a specified variant PAL FR;
  • a specific product code or EAN;
  • certain inserts present only on a manufacture;
  • The absence of a budget strip in a homogeneous shelf.

If your goal is really the first draw, you have to go further than the colour of the jacket: compare the product code, the EAN, the legal mentions, the disc and the scans of a documented copy.

Why price differential is not automatic

A standard edition can attract more collectors, but its value is not deduced from a fixed rule. It depends in particular on:

  1. the number of copies actually available in each edition;
  2. local demand for this jacket;
  3. condition and completeness;
  4. the region and language;
  5. a possible review sought.

There is therefore no reliable multiplier of the type "black label = two or three times the price". Compares the sales of each variant separately.

How to identify it on an ad

  • Look at the slice and jacket: a silver/Platinum color, a red band "Greatest Hits" = reissue.
  • No special label = probably standard edition, not necessarily first draw.
  • Request a clear picture of the complete jacket: this is where the edition is read.
  • Beware of blurred ads: a seller who does not clearly show the jacket can (voluntaryly or not) sell a Platinum at the price of a black label.
  • Control the support: the disc, the package leaflet and the jacket must belong to the same edition. A recomposed copy can mix a standard box with a Platinum disc.

The classic trap is not only to receive a Platinum: it is to buy a "married" copy, composed of elements from several editions.
