You see a game announced "PAL FR". This may mean French jacket, French notice in the game — or simply "sold in France". This information sometimes overlaps, but it is not synonymous.

The right reflex is to separate region, packaging, language and publishing before talking about value.

Quick response

  • PAL is historically a standard video and, by extension, a family of European outputs; It's not a language.
  • FR must be specified: jacket, leaflet, texts and voices may have different languages.
  • The PEGI logo does not prove a French jacket or the presence of French. PEGI is European and was adopted in 2003.
  • A "PAL" ad alone does not guarantee French: it can be a UK PAL or multi without a FR notice.

To describe a copy properly, note:

Is a French version worth more?

Sometimes, but not in principle. A French variant can benefit from a local application or a lower offer. In other cases, several countries share the same disc, another variant is requested more, or the gap is too small to be meaningful.

To measure a deviation:

  1. compares concluded sales of the same edition and the same state;
  2. separates jacket FR, multi and UK;
  3. checks the number of sales, not just a record ad;
  4. take into account the delivery and content included.

How to recognize a PAL FR on an ad

Before you buy, check these clues:

  • Photography of the front, the back and the slice: read the languages and legal mentions without just the PEGI logo.
  • Remove the product code and the EAN: the exact number is more useful than a simple "PAL".
  • Control support: the disc or cartridge code must be consistent with the box.
  • Request the package leaflet and inserts: an FR box with a notice from another country is a reconstituted copy.
  • Checks languages in a dedicated source or in the manual; A French jacket does not always guarantee French voices.

Useful message to the seller: "Can you photograph the back of the jacket, the leaflet and the disc/cartouche code? I'm looking for French and French packaging in the game. »

The case of multilingual games

Many recent games are released in PAL multi: a single European edition containing several selectable languages, including French. In this case, "PAL FR" and "PAL multi with FR" are functionally equivalent to playing.

For some collectors, a French jacketed edition remains more desirable than a multi-generic edition. It's a preference, not a market law.

Set your own PAL rule

There is no "good" universal response. The important thing is to be coherent:

  • Purist FR: only dedicated French case and notice.
  • Pragmatic: PAL FR or multi with French accepted.
  • Player: Any PAL compatible version, regardless of language.

Once your rule is fixed, write it down for each game. That's what keeps you from buying a version that doesn't fit your logic and regret it at resale.
